Cyclists take on Woking Bikeathon challenge

(this is the first year the Bikeathon has come through Runnymede – How was it for you?)

CYCLISTS took to the streets for the Woking Bikeathon on Sunday, helping to raise funds for a variety of good causes.

WK133048_65Bishop David Brown School in Sheerwater was packed with 1,005 cyclists of all ages on Sunday morning as they got ready to zoom off from the start line on two routes – a 14-mile ride or, for those wanting to give themselves a tougher challenge, 29 miles.

The route led the cyclists around parts of Chobham, Horsell, Chertsey and Egham with a number of checkpoints along the way.

Participants said they were thrilled the event had returned thanks to the hard work of the Rotary Club of Woking, after it was cancelled last year by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, which had previously run the fundraiser for more than 20 years.

Terry Smith, joint organiser of the event with Colin Kite, said: “It was absolutely brilliant. I could not have asked for more from the marshals, the riders and the weather.”

Sponsors for this year’s event were Trident Honda, Bourne Valley Garden Centre Addlestone, Freedom Leisure and Barlow Robbins Solicitors.

Money from the bikeathon will now be counted and charities that will benefit from the proceeds are Woking Hospice, The White Lodge Centre, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, The Children’s Society, Woking Community First Responders and other Rotary Club of Woking charities.
