Runnymede celebrate sporting achievements

RunnymedeSportsAwards1The 2013 Runnymede Sports Awards were held on Tuesday 26 November with over 100 people attending the celebrations. Foxhills in Ottershaw continue to support and sponsor this event by hosting the awards evening.  The event acknowledges the achievement of local sports people and clubs as well as recognising the valuable role of those who volunteer as organisers and coaches.

The event is organised annually by Sport Runnymede and its Chairman, Tony Babbage OBE.  The Mayor of Runnymede Councillor Yvonna Lay attended alongside two guest presenters at the ceremony; Ben Watts (British U15 trampoline champion and member of the Surrey ELITE scheme) and Tom Smallbone (London Irish rugby prop forward and a Royal Holloway University of London student).

Mayor of Runnymede, Cllr Yvonna Lay said: “This event is not just about celebrating the award winners, the top of the local sporting pyramid, but also everyone involved in sport as a whole in the Borough, in particular the club organisers and supporters. Without them there would be no organised sport.

“Sport Runnymede, our local Sports Council, together with the Borough Council, recognise the importance of community based sport. On their behalf I want to thank the large number of sports clubs in our Borough, of all types and sizes, each team member, and the large number of volunteers who give of their time and energy to ensure the successful continuation of our grass roots associations.”

A surprise award was presented to the Chairman of Sport Runnymede by Jim Brookman and Eddie Renham of the Surrey Motorcycle Trials Club in recognition of the outstanding work Tony has done for local sport over a significant number of years.

Those who win a local award automatically go through to the assessment panel for the county awards; Surrey Sports Awards 2013 to be held on 6 December 2013. Linda Beere, Staines Boat Club, Hannah McCarthy and Manorcroft U9s have all been shortlisted in their various categories.
