Police warn shoppers following distraction theft scam

Police VestSurrey Police has warned shoppers to be on their guard after thieves distracted a woman outside a Camberley supermarket and made off with her bank card.

The victim was outside Sainsbury’s in Blackwater Valley Road, Camberley, around 11-30am on Saturday (31 May) when a woman approached her holding a £10 note which she said she had seen fall out of her purse. The victim opened her purse and the woman touched her purse showing her where the money had fallen out. The victim was adamant she had never had a £10 note and the suspect eventually walked away.

When the victim got home, she realised her debit card had been taken from her purse. It later emerged that the card had been used to withdraw £300 from the cash point in the same Sainsbury’s car park where the victim had first been approached by the suspect.
