Surrey County Council Chairman Sally Marks has opened a new Coroner’s Court complex in Woking. Surrey High Sheriff Elizabeth Kennedy and Her Majesty’s Senior Coroner for Surrey, Richard Travers, were present at the opening ceremony, alongside the Chief Coroner of England and Wales, His Honour Judge Peter Thornton QC, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress of Woking, Councillor Derek McCrum and Mrs Rosemary McCrum and Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Localities and Community Wellbeing, Richard Walsh.

Addressing the ceremony, Mrs Marks said: ‘Of around 11,500 deaths per annum within Surrey, around 4,500 are reported to the Coroner and there are around 750 inquests each year. Each case is different, each has its own particular circumstances…
