Following the news that London and South East passengers made a record 289 million journeys between April and June, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Planning Mike Goodman said: “These figures are yet another reason why Crossrail 2 is vital for commuters and the economy.
“With daily commuter numbers on the South West Mainline to Waterloo alone set to rise 25%, investment in infrastructure schemes like this is essential to ensuring Surrey and London’s economies continue to go from strength to strength.
“That is why we’re examining the possibility of putting forward further improvements to the planned route in Surrey, which already takes in parts of the county at its southern tip.”
The news that passengers made the highest number of journeys in the first quarter of any fiscal year since records began in 2002 follows four Surrey services being named among the most overcrowded.
